Hi, I’m Melanie
I grew up on the traditional lands of the Peramangk People, in the Adelaide Hills. After living for a number of years interstate and abroad, I returned to the hills in 2006 and now again call the Adelaide Hills home. I am a mum, trail runner, an environmentalist and an active volunteer for a number of organisations.
My professional career has been a twisting path. For over 20 years I worked as a manager in the Arts industry, where I was committed to telling meaningful stories, making the arts accessible to all, and providing mentorship for emerging professionals.
After studying a Master of Project Management, I switched gears to work in multidisciplinary management consulting and project management. Together with my husband, we founded and ran a small business, Lobethal Bulk Foods, offering consumers an opportunity to buy organic whole-foods while reducing single-use waste in our region.
After my family was affected by the 2019 bushfires, I realised that individual actions were not enough. In the weeks after the fires, I witnessed the value of connected communities, but also the harsh reality that our current systems are failing to protect us from the climate crisis.
I’ve been a campaigner, arts manager, mentor, community volunteer, business owner and project manager. I know how to turn ideas into action. I served as Deputy Mayor of Adelaide Hills Council where I worked with community to get outcomes on cycling infrastructure, reducing waste, free period products, sustainable procurement and more. It was the first time in Adelaide Hills Council history that both senior roles (Mayor and Deputy Mayor) have been held by women.
As a volunteer, I served for three years as the Secretary of the Lobethal Community Association and have volunteered for a number of organisations including:
Trees for Life as a tree grower
Oxfam as a Close the Gap campaigner
The World Wildlife Fund as a researcher
Our local school in the Reconciliation committee
Lobethal Community Kindergarten supporting their bush-kindy program
I understand what it is to be a grass-roots volunteer and highly value the work done by volunteers in our community.
As your Greens Member of Parliament, I’m committed to progress towards a sustainable, fair future for people and planet.
