Greens condemn decision to keep greyhound racing alive in SA
The Greens strongly oppose today’s announcement that greyhound racing will be allowed to continue, saying the industry must be shut down rather than given another chance.
The Malinauskas Government has spent two years trying to reform an industry that has repeatedly failed greyhounds, and it’s disturbing it wants to keep it going indefinitely under the watch of yet another regulator.
Quotes attributable to Greens MLC Melanie Selwood:
“Why are we giving another chance to a cruel and archaic industry that the rest of the world is already phasing out?”
“We’re not just talking about one bad apple here. Animal welfare breeches are a systemic and widespread problem that have continued to happen despite the industry being under the microscope.”
“More than 11,000 South Australians have signed a petition calling for this industry to end. The Malinauskas Government should not be declaring the future of greyhound racing settled while that parliamentary inquiry is still underway.”
“The Greens will continue to stand with the community in demanding an end to greyhound racing in South Australia.”
